What’s in a Name?

I thought I would take a different look at what Science Camps of America means:

Definition of SCIENCE

The intellectual and practical activity encompassing the systematic study of the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment.

Definition of CAMP

A recreational institution providing facilities for outdoor activities, sports, crafts, and other special interests and typically featuring rustic overnight accommodations.

Definition of AMERICA

A landmass in the western hemisphere that consists of the continents of North and South America joined by the Isthmus of Panama. Used as a name for the United States.

These definitions came from Google. I also looked up the definitions using the Merriam-Webster, Cambridge, and Oxford online dictionaries. What is very interesting is that I thought that the Google results were the clearest, most succinct definitions for all three words.

So our name defines our mission:  Learn science while recreating in the Americas! Sounds exactly like what we want to do. We will just have to add an asterisk to Google’s definition of America to include Hawaii.

  1. Learning science while recreating in america sounds like a great way to spend some time. The more I find out about science, the more I want to know. Recreation should be anyone’s goal no mater where you are…and the Americas ha ve about a million amazing places to experience.
